  • Charles Bukowski's Nirvana
Charles Bukowski's Nirvana revolves around a young man traveling to an undetermined destination, questioning his purpose in the world. Along the young man's aimless journey, he encounters a moment in time at a charming diner. In just that moment something is awakened inside of him, but even with a sense of purpose, sadness follows. "Nirvana" is a melancholy postcard from memories long past.

  • LIFE: A Cosmic Story
I worked as a digital artist for California Academy of Science's Viz Studio for 4 months on their planetarium film Life: A Cosmic Story

Working for the Viz Studio at California Acedemy of Sciences was a beautiful challenge. Working on a film that would fill the Morrison Planetarium (the largest all-digital planetarium in the world) via 6 projectors was huge responsibility. From animating to render wrangling, I wore many hats.

  • The Conspirator
A brief view of the rotoscoping work I did for Robert Redford's The Conspirator (2010)

Going to work everyday knowing I was going to be apart of team of seasoned professional vfx artists was a real treat. Rotoscoping is alway such a important role in order to hold all the other pieces of the illusion in the realm of possibility. It takes a disciplined individual with a good eye to get clean roto done.

  • PTSD
A personal experiment about the mental illness associated with war. As the title indicates, the theme started with the acronym P.T.S.D. which stands for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Growing up with a mother who was a social worker turned school councilor, I learned about the term early on.
Wanting to capture the sense of gravity from war and translate it into a digital painting was the challenge.

Started 2012 with my 1st Solo Art Show!

"Everything, from the 7 or so sketchbooks laid out on the tables for inpection, to the careful selection of the prints, and even to the grafitti added to the wall was so expressive of Joaquin that it was clear why the energy and the feeling of the night was so positive and stunning; his pressence in the space, along side his art, was exactly what gave the show the ability to leave an enormous impact on the viewers and guests. I think, perhaps, that Joaquin's show was a fantastic example of the way art can affect us, as a community, in a completely beautiful and cohesive mannor and if we all try to live our lives a little more naked (so to speak), we can create an environment filled with encouragement and understanding."- ReneK 2/03/12
